A London borough has ditched plans to house tenants 138 miles away from the capital because of high local rents.

Waltham Forest Council had been offering residents accommodation in 27 units it owns in Walsall in the West Midlands.

However, only six households have so far accepted the offer.

Councillors have now decided not to buy any more properties outside the capital, and to try to find more accommodation in east London.

The council, which has also moved people to Luton and Margate and has 21,000 on its waiting list, will continue to try to let the remaining units in Walsall.

It is one of several local authorities complaining of a lack of affordable accommodation in its area, with private landlords charging more than Local House Allowance caps.
