Is there a sensible alternative to the compulsory regulation of letting agents and landlords?
Eric Walker believes that there is and he suggests that there should be a ‘lettings police’ force.
This ‘crimestoppers’ body would control all letting agents, not just those who choose to belong to a membership body or an ombudsman scheme.
You can read more about his idea in today’s blog.

Refreshing ideas - and about time. It was like groundhog day on here. Sometimes, I find when your head hurts, it's time to stop banging it against the wall.
This gave me food for thought, Thanks.
I think Eric has got a good idea there; giving the consumer some teeth is always better than waiting for a disinterested local authority department to decide what to do.
The blog link is below BTW - it needs a link here Ros - its a good article but hard to find!
The Government can pass whatever legislation is appropriate, but if Local Authorities or the relevant policing Authority do not have the resources to enforce those laws it will have no impact. Resources for Local Authority have been a problem for sometime and that issue only intensifies as Westminister cut back on finance provided to Council's and QUANGOs
Miliband calls for this, ARLA calls for that, Shelter just call.....
This is a damn good idea.
Excellent ideas - worth reading.
