The Residential Landlords Association has called on the London borough of Newham to drop its controversial plans to license all private landlords on its patch.

Instead, the RLA wants Newham to use existing legislation to undertake more prosecutions of criminal landlords.

Chairman Alan Ward said: “There is no doubt Newham has a festering problem within in its private rented sector, but extra layers of bureaucracy will not stop criminal landlords.”

Newham plans to bring in its mandatory licensing scheme on January 1, and would be the first local authority in England and Wales to introduce a blanket regime.
