Councillors in Northampton are to discuss plans to create a ‘social’ lettings agency to improve standards of privately-let homes.
The proposal - not yet agreed by the authority - is for a new not-for-profit service which would handle only “properties in good condition” as well as providing “a quality mark for people looking to rent in Northampton.”
“Last year we began to tackle rogue landlords with new licensing powers to protect tenants and neighbourhoods. And now we are strengthening our private sector housing team to look at rented accommodation across the town” says Mary Markham, council leader.
“We are seeing a real growth in the private rented sector as more people want to rent a home in our town. Creating a social lettings agency is an opportunity to work with landlords to offer a better deal for private tenants through offering guaranteed good-quality properties, at an affordable rent, which are well-managed” she claims.
