10 years in jail for rent collector who deliberately drove over tenant

A man has been jailed for 10 years for deliberately running over a tenant during a heated row over a rent dispute.

Shahid Hussain drove his Vauxhall Corsa at Muhammed Pervez outside his rented home in Bradford in July 2014 leaving him with fractures to his jaw, cheekbone, eye socket, nose, and teeth, and severe bruising to his hands, torso, back, and legs.

The Bradford Telegraph & Argus reports that Hussain has now been found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Hussain and his brother-in-law, Mohammed Khurshid, 34, have also been found guilty of two charges of committing an act intending to pervert the course of public justice after the pair threatened witnesses at the scene of the incident.

The court heard that Pervez had been involved in a confrontation with Hussain, of Boynton Street, West Bowling, after he had gone round to collect rent from the victim on behalf of his parents, the landlords of the property.

The newspaper reports that Hussain drove his car, with two young children inside, at Pervez before then reversing the vehicle over him. Pervez was described as "screaming in the road" after being run over. 

Khurshid is then alleged to arrived at the scene in a different vehicle. The court heard that witnesses reported him shouting at the injured tenant: "Are you happy now? This is what happens when you don't pay your rent."

Hussain and Khurshid then reportedly threatened two witnesses with one of them saying: "You had better not make this look bad for us. We will track you down."
