Call for ban on letting agents' boards near university campus

There’s been a call to ban letting boards from streets near a university campus.

Councillors in York say the boards which go up in streets of predominantly student houses "damage the visual environment" and should be banned, with online advertising only for homes which are available to let.

"Residents feel strongly that [boards] are an eyesore that reduce pride in the community. We also know that students are concerned at properties that could become a target for crime during university holidays if they are so openly advertised. With the rise of websites that offer online advertising, physical letting boards are unnecessary and serve only as a form of visual ‘one-upmanship’ between individual letting agencies” says one councillor quoted in the York Press.

The councillors have asked the officers of their local authority to consider applying for a Regulation 7 Direction - already used by some councils - under which letting agents have to apply for planning permission before they can put up any advertising boards.

The York Press says the move follows recent attempts to win voluntary agreement from letting agents about limiting boards. Although some agents signed up, support was not unanimous so the councillors now say the use of formal power is the only option.
