A tenant referencing service, FCC Paragon, says 17.6 per cent of all requests it has received in the past 12 months have been for foreign nationals - an insight into the scale of work facing letting agents and landlords under the new Right To Rent regulations.
The Home Office says Right To Rent will be the responsibility of all agents and landlords from February 1.
Agents and landlords are obliged to assess tenants regardless of nationality.
FCC Paragon - which is one of a number of firms selling services to check tenants and their official documents such as passports, visas and residency permits - says 64.8 per cent of these were applications from within the EU and or EEA member states. There were 164 countries represented during this period.
Under Right To Rent, those responsible for letting properties and failing to make the necessary checks could be fined up to £3,000 per tenant if found guilty of renting out a property to someone who is illegally living in the UK.
