The trading standards division of a London council claims it has checked on all 202 letting agencies in its borough to ensure they are in one of the three official redress schemes.
According to Enfield council, all 202 agencies were within its boundaries. Some 172 of them were clearly members of one of the schemes, but 30 agencies “required further inspections” to check.
Eventually just six were found to be non-compliant - after being told by trading standards officers of the legal position, they too complied.
“Letting agents and property management companies must follow strict guidelines to ensure a fair deal for both tenants and landlords. Trading standards often do spot checks on companies to ensure they comply with legislation” said a council spokesman.
