Trade body launches new fire safety tool

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has launched a new version of its Fire Safety Logbook which has been endorsed by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA).

The logbook aims to help landlords in England and Wales keep a record of their fire safety precautions in one easy-to-use document.

It includes updated regulations and contains literature to help landlords carry out risk assessments and safety checks.

Since last year it has been mandatory for landlords to install smoke detectors on every floor of their property where someone is living or partially living. 

Carbon monoxide alarms must also be fitted in any room within a rental property where there is a solid fuel-burning appliance.

This week two landlords were fined by Hull City Council for a number of fire safety failings.

“We have developed this logbook to help landlords identify, reduce and control any potential fire risks in their rental properties,” says Richard Price, the NLA's director of operations. 

“We are delighted that The Chief Fire Officers Association, which brings together all fire and rescue services across the country, has endorsed the Logbook.”

Jonathan Herrick, chair of the CFOA Business Safety Group, adds: “Landlords have to satisfy requirements from Housing Authorities and this log book, when completed, is great evidence that the right things are being done and that safety is being secured.”

The updated Fire Safety Logbook is available from the NLA website as a free download or can be purchased in print form.
