Tenancy deposits in England and Wales are typically £100 dearer than the Scottish equivalent.
Between June 2015 and May 2016, the average deposit across Scotland cost £794.11 - that’s 11.47 per cent or an average of £102.89 less than the £897.000 average for properties across England and Wales during the same period.
Edinburgh’s EH postcode has the most expensive tenancy deposits in Scotland with an average of £908.44. This is more than double the average for rented homes in Kirwall’s KW district, which is Scotland’s cheapest at £441.67.
Deposits for properties around Aberdeen (£860.39), Kirkcaldy (£794.11) and Falkirk (£744.21) all average over £700, with the figure for the Outer Hebrides (£464.00) and Dumfries and Galloway (£499.35) averaging below £500.
Properties with Kingston-upon-Thames’ KT postcode have the most expensive tenancy deposits in the whole of the UK with an average of £1,715.25.
The cheapest average in England and Wales was Liverpool’s on £445.00, just £3.33 more expensive than Kirwall’s.
