London politician Sian Berry - who was the Green Party candidate for the Mayoral elections in the capital in May - has set up a so-called Big Renters’ Survey to get information on letting agents.
Berry, a member of the London Assembly and a local councillor in Camden, and herself a private rental sector tenant, says the survey can “help us make stronger proposals for what can be done and the benefits a renters union could bring, based on evidence from the people who matter.”
She adds: “I rent my flat and know that high rents and frequently moving home can take their toll.”
In addition, Berry had told the Hackney Gazette that she pays over half of her salary in rent and has lived in six different rental properties since moving to London.
“Tell me about your repair nightmares, how you’ve been treated by landlords and letting agents” she says.
In previous elections the Green Party has advocated caps on, or abolition of, letting agency fees and much stronger penalties for rogue landlords.
The party’s current national leader, Natalie Bennett, has submitted her resignation and Sian Berry has been tipped as a possible replacement when party elections are held in the autumn.
