An organisation called Somerset Property Network has organised over 50 landlords in the course of little over one month and it now opposing a selective licensing proposal being put forward by its local council.
The group has emerged via a Facebook campaign with its members angry about each of their properties facing a five-yearly charge of £350 if the licensing proposal goes through.
“We are firmly of the opinion that the Council needs to run its own business properly before it starts to charge us to tell us how to run ours!” says the campaign organisers. Their work is sponsored by TR Online Lettings.
The first meeting of the campaign attracted 80 buy to let owners in Weston-super-Mare: the local authority did not attend, because - it is thought - there may be a legal challenge being mounted to the proposed charge.
The local authority says it has not yet received a formal letter from the group or its representatives challenging the proposal.
