With just nine weeks to go before the deadline, only a small proportion of Welsh agents and landlords have registered for the controversial Rent Smart Wales scheme.
Data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the Residential Landlords Association shows that the registration and licensing scheme - launched last November and requiring all agents and landlords to register their properties and undergo training - reveals that just 2,025 licences have been issued to landlords and 211 to agents.
This is despite there being an estimated 130,000 landlords in Wales, of which 50 to 60 per cent self-manage, says the RLA. There are also thought to be around 1,055 agents.
“We warned that registration and licensing schemes such as these are a bureaucratic nightmare” says Douglas Haig, RLA director for Wales.
“We have always been 100 per cent supportive of licensing for letting agents and the comparatively high number of those who are licensed already indicates that Rent Smart Wales would have been better focussing on this group from the off.”
