Research by independent fact-checking organisation Full Fact has revealed that there are 12 local authority areas in the UK where a person on the average salary would have to spend 60 per cent or more of their income to pay the average private rent.
The organisation, which selects its research as a result of public debate on key issues, has looked at average private rents as a result of a statement by Labour’s shadow secretary of state for health, Diane Abbott.
Last week Abbott, who is MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, said: “There are people paying astronomic rents nowadays - 60 per cent of your income on rental.”

What shocks most tenants is that their largest expense does not count towards their credit score! Yesterday The Young Foundation in conjunction with The Big Issue launched the #makerentcount campaign to encourage tenants to rent report to Experian. This is facilitated by CreditLadder which works with tenants, landlords and agents to enable reporting at no cost.
