Supervision order after "campaign of harassment" against letting agent

A man is reported to have launched “a campaign of harassment” against a lettings agent just an hour after signing a tenancy with the company.

The Daily Record newspaper reports that a hearing at Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that, between September 1 and 6, Stephen Mahon repeatedly called Jewel Homes in Coatbridge to complain about his living situation. 

Specifically, he was complaining about an item in the property that had been broken, and he was concerned that he would have to settle a previous tenant’s utility debt. 

Mahon also visited the agency’s office and “placed other employees in a state of fear and alarm” having demanded to speak directly with the female agent who had presided over the signing, the newspaper claims. He also made telephone calls and left voicemails; eventually his number was blocked by the agency.

On at least one occasion police were also called to Mahon’s home .

The newspaper says that in mitigation Mahon’s solicitor said: “My client has difficulty in dealing with certain situations. His GP has mentioned about the possibility of a personality disorder.”

The Sheriff said Mahon should be ashamed of the “barrage” and abuse.“On a very tight margin, I will place you under a community payback order rather than give you a custodial sentence” the Sheriff said.

Mahon was put under supervision for 18 months and was told this should include anger management. He was also ordered to pay a compensation order of £400 and not to approach or contact the agent victim.
