A landlord who illegally converted a property into seven flats and rented them out without planning permission faces having to repay the rental income he illegally benefitted from as a result of the conversion.
Nazmul Haq from Tower Hamlets, was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court for an offence under S.179(2) and (8) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
He was summonsed to court for breaching an enforcement notice and is now subject to confiscation proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which could see him forced to sell the property in order to pay a confiscation order.
“We are committed to clamping down on landlords who feel they can make a mint out of the misery of others. There is no place ... for shoddy practices and breaking the law. As a council, we are committed to not just identifying those who break the law and prosecute them, but will also go as far as stripping criminals of their ill-gotten gains to show that crime doesn’t pay” says a spokeswoman for Barking and Dagenham authority.
