The UK Association of Letting Agents is putting out an appeal to the agency industry to ensure it is not accidentally complicit in modern day slavery.
It says that while large companies have by law to operate processes and make statements to deter involvement with contractors or others, there are steps that can be taken by smaller operators such as independent letting agencies.
These include providing training and guidance to staff on the topic and establishing a system of supply chain verification to ensure that contractors do facilitate modern day slavery, either actively or passively.
UKALA says it is also important to review existing suppliers and contractors. “Letting agents frequently employ cleaning and maintenance contractors, which operate in sectors considered high risk” says the association.
It adds: “Above all any letting agent who suspects they may have encountered a case of modern day slavery should report it. This can be done using the dedicated helpline on: 0800 0121 700 or online at: https://www.modernslaveryhelpline.org/report”.
You can see UKALA blog on the subject here.
