A new lettings agency set up at Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset says it’s setting out to atone for the misdemeanours of nearby firms at the centre of a controversial cartel scandal.
For the past two years the Competition and Markets Authority has been taking action against five agencies in the town, which received fines totalling £370,084 - a sixth was granted immunity as part of a leniency agreement it was the first to report the cartel to the CMA.
The authority found that the six firms had breached the Chapter I prohibition of the Competition Act 1998 by attempting to agree to fix fees.
Now Darren Clapp - entirely unrelated to the agencies involved in the scandal - has opened the new Burnham branch of Glentworth Lettings.
He has told the local media: “We have moved to Burnham due to the negativity in the local estate agent market over recent months. Burnham is a lovely town that needs confidence in the property market.”
Clapp, previously based in Weston-super-Mare, also plans to open in other Somerset locations incluiding Bridgwater, Taunton and Portishead later this year.
“We are a family-run specialist independent letting and property management company offering a friendly and professional service with years of experience in lettings and management of property throughout the UK” he adds.
The Burnham office will be recruiting three new staff and will handle property management as well as lettings.
