October 29 - a nervous date for agents' diaries

Here’s a date which the private rental sector may want to make a note of…even if it is with some nervousness.

The next Budget is to be held on Monday October 29 - a few weeks earlier than usual to avoid clashing with the final stages of Brexit negotiations.

In a post on Twitter, Chancellor Philip Hammond wrote: “I’m pleased to announce the Budget will take place on 29 October. I’ll set out how our balanced approach is getting debt falling while supporting our vital public services, and how we are building a stronger, more prosperous economy.”

Recent Budgets have been used to announce major reforms for the private rental sector - even if those reforms have subsequently taken months or years to become reality.

The ban on letting agents’ fees levied on tenants in England and Wales was announced at the 2016 Budget, while stamp duty reform was revealed at the 2014 Budget - that one given by former Chancellor George Osborne.

The scrapping of stamp duty for first time buyers purchases up to £300,000 was announced at the 2017 Budget.
