Fake lettings agent almost conned £1,500 out of tenants

A fake lettings agent has been caught trying to cheat prospective tenants out of £1,500 which she claimed was a deposit on an apartment.

The Daily Mail reports on a court hearing at which Preet-kaur Johal confessed to tricking the prospective tenants out of the cash when the genuine owner of the property turned up unexpectedly.

The incident happened at a property in Putney, south west London, when police also turned up to see the fake agent and the two genuine prospective tenants. The woman claiming to be an agent had a driving licence in a different name.

The tenants were contacted through Gumtree and had met the ‘agent’ on two previous occasions - and on one of those occasions she showed the pair around the property which didn’t belong to her.

Johal, of Hounslow, admitted one count of fraud by false representation and one count of possessing another person’s identity document.

She was fined £175 and handed a 12 month community order which requires her to fulfil 25 days rehabilitation, 19 sessions of a thinking skills programme and 120 hours of unpaid work.
