A lettings agent has expressed his amazement after an emotional LinkedIn post about paying himself a salary for the first time in September went viral.
Gulshan Mangat only completed on the purchase of Northwood Cambridge in July, but by September was able to pay himself a wage for the first time in two years.
He posted an image on LinkedIn of himself crying on the phone to his wife, stating: “Why am I crying? Because after nearly a year of work, sleepless nights, stress, tension and worry…I reached a milestone.
“I paid myself a salary! Until today I have not taken anything out of my business….
“For months all I have done is give….Money. Time. Energy. Blood, sweat and (quite literally!) tears.
“Today my business gave back and I was overwhelmed…As men there is a stigma that we shouldn’t express our emotions…Nothing could be further from the truth.”
Gulshan had previously worked in a number of full-time roles including as an auditor and said the stress of leaving a paid job and searching for the right franchise opportunity had caused him many sleepless nights and financial worries.
He said: “Prior to buying Northwood Cambridge I had a job as an auditor, but my wife Kam and I also bought and sold investment properties, so we both had a keen interest in this industry.
“For this reason, I left my job two years ago to pursue a dream of working in property full-time.
“I looked at many different businesses before the Northwood Cambridge resale came to my attention about a year ago.”
He said realising he could pay himself a wage for the first time in September felt like a landmark moment.
He added: “We had used up all of our savings, and been working tirelessly, and the realisation that all our hard work was beginning to pay off was such a relief that I started to cry, although they were definitely happy tears.
“I rang my wife to tell her the good news and decided to share a photograph of myself with tears in my eyes via LinkedIn. I wrote about how I was feeling and shared lots of hashtags about men’s mental health and wellbeing.”

Well done Gulshan.
Many believe that Letting Agents are guilded.....!
Owners, Principles, MD's often are often the last to be remunerated after staff, rents, compliance, insurances, franchise commission/fees, etc.
With SHELTER, Khan and others constantly eroding our few streams of legitimate and appropriate income, any monthly reward is a small victory!
