A council wants public views on empty private homes in its patch - but doesn’t want to talk about publicly-owned empty properties.
Caerphilly council’s draft ‘Private Sector Empty Homes Strategy 2023 – 2028’ sets out the authority’s plans to tackle the high numbers of empty homes in the county borough.
It also sets out the range of initiatives available to the council to help owners bring their empty homes back into use.
But a statement from the council says: “This strategy only refers to private sector empty homes and does not extend to empty homes within the council’s own housing stock or those owned by other Community Landlords.”
Residents can give their views on the draft strategy by completing an online survey at Caerphilly - Caerphilly County Borough, or by contacting the Private Sector Housing team to request a copy by calling 01443 811378.
The consultation closes on January 18.

Perhaps there should be a forum for local authorities where they can share information. Its a waste of time and public money to constantly commission strategies and surveys when legislation already exists to deal with empty properties. North West Leicestershire Council have an environmental policy which utilises legislation already in place under the 2004 Housing Act Part 4 (specifically Final Empty Dwelling Management Orders). PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSING CONDITIONS AND
EMPTY HOMES ENFORCEMENT PROTOCOL
What are they afraid of? Their hypocrisy being exposed? Why don’t they use EDMOs?
